Doonbeg 2017

So, on Saturday last we got our 2017 campaign underway with a trip to the illustrious surrounds of Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg Co. Clare. It was now two time Captain Malcolm Fleming’s first outing of his second term as Captain of Firies Golf society. On a course owned by the current President of the United States of America and a man who surely wont get a second term in Office unlike Malcolm!!!

It had been reported locally that some of our usually thorough professionals were going to stay indoors on Friday night as opposed to their usual preparation of 12 pints before a day’s golf but this turned out to be #FAKENEWS!! With a combined total of around 8 hours sleep between Dr Tom and Captain Cuddles they were still two of the first brave soldiers to depart for Doonbeg. The word hero is banded about too often in sport these days but in this case well deserved I think!!

There was almost school boy like joy amongst some members as not only were they leaving the county bounds to go golfing they were going to do so on a Ferry!! Looking at some smiles below you’d have thought they were aboard Roman Abromovichs boat in the Med!

In the society, we try to be as open to other cultures as possible and to this end we have two members from across the border in Cork something we should surely get a grant for at some stage. But no matter how hard we try to include our favourite Cork man he was determined aboard the good ship Shannon Breeze to go it alone!!

Driving into the Doonbeg Golf links one would be forgiven for thinking they were arriving at a Castle out of Disneyland so impressive is the club house, hotel, members and guest bars. The weather gods were again incredibly good to the 24-strong band of brothers from Firies which only enhanced the 360 degree views on show from the practice green near the clock tower were breath-taking.

There was also a case of day light robbery before we set out on the links, something I think that has been reported to the Gardaí in nearby Kilrush by the O’Connor brothers Dermot & Con. Unfortunately distracted by the views, the boys forgot to read the menu before settling down to their freshly cooked full Irish a mistake I hasten to add they won’t make again. Con had it covered though in return for his drive to Doonbeg and back – that was until he was informed the total cost for his full Irish would be €45.90…..

To the golf itself there was a runaway winner in the form of Captain Cuddles Mike Johnny O’Sullivan with very credible score of 37points off 9 which could have been much better as he had stood on the 18th tee box on +4 for his round! There was quiet a gap to the rest of the field which was led home by Con Connor on 33 points playing partners suggested to us after that it took him 2-3 holes to get going possibly owing to the shock of the Trump Breakfast saga!

Tied with Con on 33 point off 12 was Anthony Palmer a very credible score given the last time Anthony played golf was our Christmas hampers in November. Next up was our favourite Corkman Pat Goulding on 32 points and the final placing went to Derek Comerford on 31 points. Front nine went to Dr Tom Farrelly with 18 points and Dermot O’Connor won the back nine with 17points.

Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg is a wonderful course and a tough test of anyones golf so much so the society has decided to setup a GoFundMe fundraising webpage to try and purchase some much needed golf balls for members who had a tougher day than others in the dunes !!

On a final note thanks to our sponsor on what was a wonderful day spent on the links James O’Dowd Golf Shop in Tralee!
